Chrissi / Chrisi, Gaidouronisi island in Ierapetra, Crete This popular island just 8miles from the town of Ierapetra, is an always enjoyable day trip for holidaymakers, from May onwards Chrissi/Chrisi island boats travel daily from Ierapetra. The superb beaches and the clear blue seas of Chrissi/Chrisi are an obvious attraction for all visitors, with many coming on organized trips from other parts of Crete, however it is also very popular with locals who visit on their own boats for picnics and beach parties. The island is just 5km long with beaches on the north and south sides, a 15min walk through the sand dunes takes you from one side to the other, boats land on the south coast, where there is a taverna and snack bar. The longest beach is on the north coast and is covered with brilliant whit shells, which create a magical mix of colour. There are some archeological remains, mostly from Minoan and Roman times, there is also a small Chapel dedicated to Agios Nikolaos, but a trip to Chrissi/Chrisi is really a sun sea and sand experience. Visitors are advised to take protection from the sun, a hat is essential and an umbrella a good idea, along with drinks and sun tan cream.
